Atlantic Canada’s only summer contemporary dance festival runs from August 20 through August 23 and features performances by Canada’s top companies and dancers. This year Festival of Dance Annapolis Royal (FODAR) showcases classic choreographic works by pioneers of Canadian modern dance and dazzling new productions by internationally acclaimed contemporary choreographers.
Program 1 running August 20 and 22 features FODAR remounts of two landmark works that influenced the development of modern dance in Canada: Randy Glynn’s compelling After Godot and Danny Grossman’s witty and acrobatic Higher . Rounding out the evening is Anthem for the Living performed by the brilliant and riveting Belinda McGuire.
Program 2 running August 21 and 23 showcases the Festival’s headliner – Toronto’s Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie dancing The Man in Black , inspired by country and western great Johnny Cash. Conceived by James Kudelka, one of North America’s most sought after choreographers, this brilliant contemporary work has been presented by the National Ballet of Canada, Atlanta Ballet and Chicago’s storied Joffrey Also on Program 2 is audience favorite, Company of Angels returning to the Festival with Dancing in the Third Act . Randy Glynn’s poignant and funny piece about the ups and downs (literally) of growing old.
