Canso Islands National Historic Site

Begin at the interpretive centre and learn about the history of Grassy Island. The reception centre features a film, life-size dioramas of three island property interiors, and artifacts excavated from the properties.Visiting the island is free and the boat departs at the marina - about a 10 minute walk from the interpretive centre or a very short drive.

Grassy Island commemorates the role of the fishery in early 18th-century international trade. A thriving community of New England fishermen and merchants, it became a casualty of Anglo-French rivalry for North America. Trails on Grassy Island link 8 designated sites. Access Grassy Island by a 7 min boat ride aboard a Park's Canada vessel. Six to seven trips are made daily to the island starting at 10am to 3pm, weather permitting. Always call ahead.
